TOY DESIGN
As entries to 2017 Naef toy design competition, I submitted prototypes for 2 handcrafted wooden toys. The design allows for laserCAMM and CNC mill production streamlining, if desired. Both toys encourage creative constructability and are scaled to fit in children and adult hands alike. The instructions, which may be used as promotional material, are strategically folded and fitted around a corner (2 faces) of the packaging display box.
Joint Joy is the first interconnectable wooden toy. It is a versatile set that allows for progressively more complex constructions using STACKING, CONNECTING, EXTENDING, CORNERING, CONSTRUCTING. As one grows up, the possibilities and creations grow as well. Handcrafted from beautiful woods native to Switzerland, color finishes complement their natural finishes. The set includes 7 pieces of each wood in natural finish, as well as 7 pieces of yellow oak as its autumn leaf, green oak as its leaf, red cherry as its fruit, and blue walnut as its nut’s hull before husking. When not being played with, the acrylic box stores and displays all simple elements, protecting them from dust. 4 holes at the bottom help with dispensing the beautiful pieces that carry limitless creative potential.
Modulor’s Modules are colorful blocks derived from the modulor man meeting the rainbow. The set includes basic 8 modules based on modulor man’s heights at 1:27.5 scale (82mm : 226cm), and 8 complementary modules that complete the box. Sliced at diagonals, each module is handcrafted from a single piece of maple. Different sizes make different sounds when clashed together and provide endless variations using STACKING, TURNING, OFFSETTING, MATCHING. When not being played with, the acrylic box stores and displays all modules, protecting them from dust. Gaps between cantilevering extensions, which mark tops, help with retrieval.
